It seems the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, is serious about his critique on today’s copyright laws. So serious, in fact, that he is looking into adjusting Russia’s copyright laws in the other direction by creating a Creative Commons styled copyright scheme.

In a statement released last Thursday, the President instructed his communications ministry to “draft proposals… so as to give authors the right to make their works available on a free-licence basis to the public at large”

According to the article, this proposed copyright system would be similar to the initiative launched by Creative Commons, the San Francisco-based, non-profit organization that has created copyright licenses that allow owners to share their content for free with certain restrictions.

Finally, a more flexible, modern alternative to ever-increasing punishments for our digital age’s inevitable copyright infringements.
